The Retinal vs Retinol Question

Posted by Tom Fielding on 15th May 2026

Why retinaldehyde works faster, and how to start without irritation.

Retinol has to be converted twice in the skin before it becomes active. Retinal is one step closer, so it works faster at lower strengths.

  • Start two nights a week
  • Apply to completely dry skin
  • Buffer with moisturiser if you're sensitive
  • Wear SPF every morning

Mild dryness in the first few weeks is normal. Persistent redness or stinging means it's time to scale back.
